Job Description

The Department of Science and Innovation – National Youth Service (DSI-NYS) programme is part of South Africa’s National Youth Service Programme. Managed by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) under the National Research Foundation, this initiative provides unemployed graduates under 35 years of age with 12-month placements at partner institutions. Participants receive monthly stipends to support their basic needs while gaining valuable work experience.

This program is designed to:

  • Develop skills and reduce long-term unemployment.
  • Foster a culture of community service and volunteerism.
  • Equip participants with practical opportunities to access the economy.
  • Instill an understanding of their role in South Africa’s development.

Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in assigned tasks at partner institutions.
  • Utilize opportunities to develop skills relevant to their field of study.
  • Engage in projects that promote community service and personal development.
  • Collaborate with teams and contribute to institutional goals.
  • Complete all tasks and responsibilities as defined by the host institution.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in one of the following areas:
    • Science, Engineering, or Technology
    • Journalism and Media Studies
    • Communications
  • Proficiency in computer literacy.

Experience

  • Prior work experience is not required but may be advantageous.

Skills

  • Strong communication and organizational abilities.
  • Writing and/or radio and television skills.
  • Good analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work under pressure.
